Skiff pulls from and utilizes various works of Xavier from song lyrics, vocal and spoken word play and original monologues created over the years of 1995-2024 and includes dance and movement techniques developed and practiced from 1983-2024.
Skiff is a look at an artist on the sea of life and his creative journey as he encounters the calm and turbulent terrain of the unpredictable ocean. "The crimson waves are the blood shed by the fisherman who do battle with the sea creatures beneath the surface. The tears that mingle with the waves are from the hopes and dreams shattered by the unpredictable nature of the ocean."
Xavier has spent north of 40 years on this journey and Skiff is the accumulation of skills sets, practices and experiences as an African American man in search of the ultimate wave of artistry.
Told through the idea of mythological tales, Skiff-played by Xavier- encounters a boy, a bird and a fish that represent the gifts of gods that watch over him on his journey as he questions if they're listening to his prayers in time of need. Ultimately realizing that those he encounters are a reflection of himself at various stages of life.
